Pallinup River

Spent a week camping along the Pallinup River. Great canoeing as the river is very full from the recent rains. With grey skies and very strong easterly ‘s it was tough paddling down but surfing on the way back, it was not brilliant for photography but sometimes its nice to just sit back and enjoy.

MOLLOY ISLAND BIRDS

For new year I went to Molloy Island, if you want a complete break and love boating or canoeing then this is a must. Molloy Island is located on the Scott River and Blackwood River and about a 10km drive from Augusta. If you have accommodation you can take your car across on the barge or there is a camp site on the mainland side. Lots of birds and good bush walking tracks and plenty of places to paddle.

WHALE SHARK ENCOUNTER – EXMOUTH

Well another year is coming to a close so I thought I would post a series of photos that have a special meaning to me. I was out snorkelling with the whale sharks and it was the last one for the day and only a few of us jumped in. The whale shark was slowly making his way past when suddenly he turned and put on a performance, he dived and then turned over a coupe of times then came up vertically and then carried on his way. It probably lasted for only a few minutes but it has been etched in mind forever. I was using slide film and had a 24-120 lens on which I had to zoom back to the 24mm end because he was so close, and that is not a good focal length to use in a flat port and I didn’t have a chance to alter any settings so they are not technically great but the experience was something I will never forget,

Birds

Here is a selection of birds. Pelicans would have to be be one of my favourite birds, the way they come into land can be very graceful or so awkward that you think they were landing for the first time. The Black-Tailed Pacific Gulls have huge wingspan and are very graceful riding the thermals along the cliffs.

Birds of Coral Bay and Exmouth

Have just spent 8 days in Coral Bay, the weather unfortunately was not on my side with winds gusting up to 35 knots on a couple of the days. Ningaloo Reef looked like the outer reef with large white caps rolling in. Had a great time anyway and was able to get out and see a little of the wildlife around Coral Bay and Exmouth.

BROLGA MAGIC – ALONG THE GIBB RIVER ROAD

I walked into a gorge for a sunrise shoot and came across two Broglas feeding. I was able to get fairly close and watch them dance and forage along the bank.

Brolga and other cranes have elaborate courtship displays. This mating dance is what Brolgas are most famous for. With wings spread and facing each other, the two Brolgas jump, dance and pirouette, prance about and perform with a lot of head movement. Brolgas will often jump a metre into the air with wings outspread, or they will beat their wings whilst taking a few steps forward. At the same time they make loud trumpeting calls to each other. Although primarily a mating ritual, such displays do occur all year round, but to a much lesser degree.
