They're Off... Cottesloe Swim

The start of the Rottnest Swim is always exciting, the power of the surf and swimmers mixing to create an interesting perspective from the air. This particular morning had very grey skies that created the perfect light and enabled the colours of the ocean and sand to blend with the painted bodies of the swimmers. This is a canvas only limited edition of 25 prints. Ilford Fine Art Canvas 150 x 100 Price $ 1,450.00 Canvas - Rolled in a tube

Summer Shadows

Australia has some of the world’s longest and best beaches. This image was taken over Scarborough Beach in West Australian in the late afternoon. The warmth of the sunset and the long shadows created Summer Shadows. This is a canvas only limited edition of 25 prints. Ilford Fine Art Canvas 60 x 60 Price $ 895.00 Canvas - Rolled in a tube

Industrial Bronco

As I fly over an area called the Alcoa ponds I am always amazed to see the colours and patterns changing day after day. The ponds receive mud slurry from the refinery, where all useable liquids and solids are reclaimed. From above, I can see amazing shapes that form in the ponds, such as this image that resembles a horse rearing up. By afternoon, the shape had disappeared. Ilford Fine Art Canvas 120 x 79 Price $750.00 Canvas - Rolled in a tube

Six Mile Pool

One of my favourite rest stops on the drive to Albany, nestled in the woods is this little oasis, which I call Six Mile Pool. At the right time of day and with no wind the swamp trees reflect in an abstract pattern which is tranquil and soothing. This is a limited edition of 10 canvas prints. Ilford Fine Art Canvas 1.5m wide. Price $1,450.00 Canvas - Rolled in a tube

Sand Lovers

Summer brings out the Sand Lovers. They grab a bit of space, throw down a towel, slap on sunscreen and bake in the sun. When I captured this image I loved the space between each little group and the texture of the sand that created a colourful moment in time. Ilford Fine Art Canvas 60 x 60 Price $450.00 Canvas - Rolled in a tube

Ancient Lands

The last rays of the sun cast shadows over this amazing landscape giving the area an alien feeling. This was captured over the Shark Bay Heritage area. Ilford Fine Art Canvas 120 x 89 Price $770.00 Canvas - Rolled in a tube

Australia Day Challenge

Every year for the past five years I have been capturing the Havaianas Thong Challenge at Cottesloe beach. Each year the colours of the thongs change so it makes each capture very different from the previous year. With calm conditions and 2210 people below, I was able to capture the moment when they all joined to break the record for the largest crowd on inflatable thongs. Ilford Fine Art Canvas 150 x 100 Price $990.00 Canvas - Rolled in a tube

Cerynitis

This image is one of my favourites. In Greek mythology Cerynitis or the Golden Hind was an enormous deer with huge antlers like a stag. The colour and beautiful afternoon light created the perfect shape of the mystical deer. This image is from the Lake Eyre series. Ilford Fine Art Canvas 120 x 79 Price $750.00 Canvas - Rolled in a tube

Coastline Colours 3

White sand mixed with limestone, and the rich blues and greens of the ocean around Shark Bay combine to create a beautiful, harmonious blend of colours. Ilford Gold Fibre 85 x 85 Price $650.00 - Rolled in a tube

Colours of Lake Eyre 9

I was lucky to see Lake Eyre a few months after a flood. The receding water was a vivid green upon the white of this normally barren salt lake. Ilford Gold Fibre 120 x 79 Price $750.00 - Rolled in a tube

Colours of Shark Bay 2

Western Australia has the most diverse and amazing coastlines and the landscape along the shores of Shark Bay is no exception. The colours, textures and patterns blend to form a colourful abstract. Ilford Gold Fibre 85 x 85 Price $650.00 - Rolled in a tube

Cosmic Dreaming

This image is from a series I took of Lake Eyre. As the lake dried, the salt whirled into patterns that were both mystical and mystifying. To me, this image represents a being suspended in the cosmos, sleeping or dreaming ... Ilford Fine Art Canvas 120 x 79 Price $750.00 Canvas - Rolled in a tube

Dragonfly

The small tidal inlet forcing its way through the dunes created the dragonfly. Captured along the Shark Bay coastline. Ilford Gold Fibre 120 x 79 Price $750.00 - Rolled in a tube

Enchanted Woods of the Sea

This image was captured in the Shark Bay Heritage area. The contrast between the black areas and the white sand carved an enchanted forest. Ilford Gold Fibre 85 x 85 Price $650.00 - Rolled in a tube

Inlet

Inlet means, “little arm of the sea” and that’s exactly what I thought as I captured this landscape. The little arms are reaching out to the land and bringing a colourful splash to the landscape. Ilford Gold Fibre 85 x 85 Price $650.00 - Rolled in a tube

Kangaroo Abstract

I think at times my pilot thinks I am nuts. I remember telling him that we had to circle the area again as I noticed kangaroos. He thought I meant live kangaroos, but what I saw were textures and colours creating an image of kangaroos bounding across the landscape. This image is from the Lake Eyre series. Ilford Fine Art Canvas 120 x 79 Price $750.00 Canvas - Rolled in a tube

Lake Eyre Abstract 5

Flying over Lake Eyre was one of the most exciting and emotional flights I have ever experienced. The colours, light, textures and patterns changed with each nautical mile. Ilford Fine Art Canvas 120 x 79 Price $750.00 Canvas - Rolled in a tube

Lake Lefroy Abstract 3

Lake Lefroy is just a short flight from Kalgoorlie and I came across it 6 years ago when I was doing some work for BHP in the area. I was back over the site late last year and couldn’t believe how much it had changed. Parts of the mine seem to take on an alien appearance. Ilford Gold Fibre 85 x 85 Price $650.00 - Rolled in a tube

Lake Lefroy Abstract 6

Most of my images are taken while flying below 1500ft, as I prefer to capture sections of the landscape to reflect my thoughts as I travel above the terrain. My immediate thoughts from this perspective were of a tribal, perhaps even an Easter Island-like motif, but it was the colour palette that brings this to life. Ilford Gold Fibre 120 x 79 Price $750.00 - Rolled in a tube

Leafy Sea Dragon

Some of the most amazing patterns are only seen from above. When I was flying over the Alcoa ponds in Kwinana, I spotted what looked like a Leafy Sea Dragon among fan coral. Ilford Gold Fibre 120 x 79 Price $750.00 - Rolled in a tube

Morning Golf

Heading out of Jandakot toward the coast there is a reporting point at the Fremantle Golf Course, which we fly over most times when heading into Perth airspace. I loved the abstract patterns of the sand bunkers against the green of the fairway and the lone golfer gave it a sense of scale. Ilford Fine Art Canvas 60 x 60 Price $450.00 Canvas - Rolled in a tube

Mystical Jelly Fish

I love flying along this stretch of coastline in the late afternoon when the dying embers of day accentuate the shapes and colours of the landscape. In this image, nature creates what appears to be a giant jellyfish floating across the sands. Ilford Gold Fibre 85 x 85 Price $650.00 - Rolled in a tube

Old Man in the Woods

A lot of my images are captured going to and from a commercial shoot. I always fly with the door off the plane so I have a great view from above as I travel across the landscape. I love the vertical perspective as the patterns and textures blend in a way we don’t normally see. In this shot, I imagine a man with a walking stick amongst the trees. Ilford Gold Fibre 120 x 79 Price $750.00 - Rolled in a tube

Reflections

The light hitting a building on an early morning aerial shoot created the most amazing reflections of Elizabeth Quay construction site in Perth City. The window cleaners give the image a sense of scale and each little section seems to tell a story. Ilford Fine Art Canvas 88 x 60 Price $550.00 Canvas - Rolled in a tube

Shark Bay Abstract 3

The coastline of Shark Bay heritage area is breathtaking with blue green water and the red dirt mixing with white sand to create amazing patterns. The colours and detail created by tides, erosion and car tracks blend together to make this a colourful abstract. Ilford Fine Art Canvas 120 x 89 Price $770.00 Canvas - Rolled in a tube

Shattered

The landscape is scarred by tracks made from cars at the mine site on Lake Lefroy. The tracks seem erratic which makes the landscape look like a shattered mirror. Ilford Gold Fibre 75 x 75 Price $480.00 - Rolled in a tube

Solitude

I was waiting for clearance into Perth airspace and we were given instructions to orbit at City Beach until advised to head to the city. It was a clear, crisp winters day. The ocean was a beautiful blue and I loved the patterns being created by the sand washing in and out. A person lying on their back looking up and with no one else around gave the scene a sense of isolation. I have always wondered what that person was thinking about. Ilford Fine Art Canvas 60 x 60 Price $450.00 Canvas - Rolled in a tube

Spears of Red

This image was captured over the Alcoa Ponds. This man made landscape has the feel of indigenous art with the tractor lines representing spears and the background colours resembling the textures of animal hides. Ilford Art Canvas 120 x 79 Price $750.00 Canvas - Rolled in a tube

Sunday Afternoon at the Beach

The last month of Summer has some of the hottest days and on this particular Sunday afternoon was no exception. Its just after midday, people and their dogs enjoy the cool waters along the beautiful beach off the Western Australian coast. Ilford Fine Art Canvas 60 x 60 Price $450.00 Canvas - Rolled in a tube

The Finger

As a student pilot in the late 1990s, I remember flying with my instructor on one of his flights to the Useless Loop Salt works and I was blown away by the abstract patterns and colours. I think this is when I thought I could combine my love of flying with photography. I was over the area again late last year and captured this colourful interpretation of the pointing finger. Ilford Gold Fibre 120 x 79 Price $750.00 - Rolled in a tube

Tidal

Sometimes a landscape is so big that it is extremely challenging to capture. Here, as daylight dimmed, the blues seemed to get darker and moodier. The contrast between the sand and the water created a truly majestic landscape. Ilford Gold Fibre 85 x 85 Price $650.00 - Rolled in a tube

Beneath My Wings by Peta Anne North

I look out at the landscape, to where sky meets earth, to where ocean meets horizon and I marvel at the beauty of nature as light, clouds, altitude and angles transform the natural and made landscape into incredible shapes. My work combines my loves of flying and photography. I dangle with the plane door off, zeroing in on what at ground level cannot be seen. I paint a broad brush with my camera as I sweep through the sky (and only sometimes scare my pilot)! When I am piloting, my hands itch to adjust my lens on the landscape below. I look for the magical and the mystical beneath my wings, seeking to share the beauty of what I see through the lens, the colors and shapes, the majestic vista of our country as seen from above.
