Birds of Coral Bay and Exmouth

Have just spent 8 days in Coral Bay, the weather unfortunately was not on my side with winds gusting up to 35 knots on a couple of the days. Ningaloo Reef looked like the outer reef with large white caps rolling in. Had a great time anyway and was able to get out and see a little of the wildlife around Coral Bay and Exmouth.

Its been a very busy time with working in the Pilbara and a quick trip to Melbourne for the PMA show. The PMA show was smaller than the last few years but still some interesting products to look at. I have posted a few photos from the three days I spent in Melbourne. It was great to get away for the day and drive the Great Ocean Road even though it rained most of the time.

BROLGA MAGIC – ALONG THE GIBB RIVER ROAD

I walked into a gorge for a sunrise shoot and came across two Broglas feeding. I was able to get fairly close and watch them dance and forage along the bank.

Brolga and other cranes have elaborate courtship displays. This mating dance is what Brolgas are most famous for. With wings spread and facing each other, the two Brolgas jump, dance and pirouette, prance about and perform with a lot of head movement. Brolgas will often jump a metre into the air with wings outspread, or they will beat their wings whilst taking a few steps forward. At the same time they make loud trumpeting calls to each other. Although primarily a mating ritual, such displays do occur all year round, but to a much lesser degree.
